How to Inspect a Used Car Before Buying (Buyer's Checklist)

Before you hand over thousands for a used car, you should know what to look for. Here's an honest checklist of what you can check yourself — and, just as importantly, where a do-it-yourself look hits its limit.

What you can check yourself

Walk around the body in daylight
Look down each panel from the front and rear at an angle. Uneven reflections, slight colour mismatches, or rippling can signal repainted panels and past bodywork. Check that panel gaps are even on both sides.

Tires
Check tread depth and look for uneven wear — wear on one edge can point to alignment or suspension problems. Check that all four tires match and note the manufacture date.

Under the hood (cold engine)
Look for obvious leaks, corrosion, or a fresh "too clean" engine bay that may be hiding something. Check oil on the dipstick — milky or gritty oil is a red flag.

Interior and electronics
Test every window, lock, light, the AC and heat, infotainment, and all warning lights at startup. A dashboard light the seller "doesn't know about" is rarely nothing.

The test drive
Listen for clunks over bumps, feel for shuddering when braking, watch for hesitation or rough shifting. Drive it cold — many problems hide once the car is warmed up.

Paperwork
Confirm the VIN matches the registration and the listing. Ask for service records.

Where the DIY check hits its limit

This is the honest part. Some of the most expensive problems are invisible without the right tools and experience:

• Hidden accident repairs — a repainted panel can look perfect to the eye. A paint thickness gauge measures the coating on every panel and reveals bodywork you simply can't see.
• Cleared fault codes — a car can run fine on the test drive while storing serious fault codes in its computer. Reading them needs an OBD diagnostic scanner.
• Underbody and frame — rust, structural damage, and worn suspension are only visible properly from underneath. A DIY look in a driveway can't reach it. Our inspector brings ramps to safely get under the car on-site and check the undercarriage, frame, and suspension up close.
• Knowing what "normal" sounds like — distinguishing a harmless noise from an expensive one takes seeing hundreds of cars.
